Does sleep time decreases as we get older?

We generally hear that; elderly people complain of insomnia; they wake up early in the morning and they complain about this situation. Indeed, the studies conducted on elderly people show that; these people wake up early in the morning and 25% of them wake up at 5 a.m and they can not sleep again.

Early wake up observed in elderly people is considered by some researchers as the sleep necessity of these people has reduced. But, as it is observed very frequently, elderly people sleep several times in daytime or they fell asleep. Therefore, they compensate the shortened night sleep time arising from early wake up, when they sleep in daytime. Sleep related problems of elderly people will be discussed in the next chapter.
